This is Les. He is a yarn rep from New York City. We had an appointment awhile ago to buy yarn. He came through town and visited with a few different yarn shops, we were one of them.

Yes, the yarn was terrific. We bought some…

But more fun than the beautiful yarn, was the lovely conversation.

We talked about kosher delis, the garment district, and his grandkids. We visited for a few hours and it was delightful.
After he brought his stuff to his car, he walked back in the front door.

“Heimish”, he said with his arms outstretched. “That is what this place is. I’ve figured it out.”

Emily and I looked at each other. “What is Heimish?” we asked.

“It’s a Yiddish word. Think about going to your grandma’s house for dinner. She’s got a good meal prepared, it’s warm and cozy. You feel taken care of and welcome. THAT is what this place is. Heimish. This shop is Heimish. You have the words All Are Welcome on the front window. Below that, you should add the word Heimish”. Les said with a big smile on his face.

I told Les, that was the best compliment we have ever received.

We will continue to strive to create a space worthy of that special Yiddish word. Heimish!

Thanks for a fun visit Les!
