I live in Somerset, WI. Just a 10 minute drive into Wisconsin from the shop.
It’s a town of about 2800 people.
Our high school has under 500 students. Each grade just over 100. Our marching band…under 30 kids. We are certainly a small town.
I love living in a town like this, on a day like this.
We meet at the Catholic Church; the high school band, the American Legion guys, and gals, a Somerset firetruck.
The band plays the Star-Spangled Banner and the Armed Forces Salute. A bagpiper plays, the American Legion Veterans offer up a prayer for the fallen, then a 21 gun salute and taps finish up the first stop.
The entire group then marches to 3 more spots in town; the bridge over the Apple River, Veteran’s Park, and Hillside Cemetery. Doing it all again each time. Then everyone meets up at the American Legion for hotdogs!
I love thinking about all the small towns all over the country gathering like our small town does to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms.
My small hometown . . . Honeoye Falls, NY. More cows than people. I knew everyone’s name in my high school class and most in the class before and after me. My younger brother is a veteran and marches in the annual parade. I’m very proud of him.
We had a great library, a five and dime and an awesome hardware store. Everyone seemed to know everyone.
Nothing like a small town.
