I watched my son at a baseball game yesterday.
He wasn’t on the red team or the green team. He was in blue. He’s been umping this summer for our local town baseball association. He’s loved it. He has hilarious stories of the crazy things that kids, coaches, and parents do and say during the game. One kid, when he came up to bat, pointed at the outfield (a la babe ruth) and said “here comes the Big Bambino”. He tells me that some of the things coaches say he can’t repeat. Oh boy! He can’t even keep track of the number of grumbles from parents after he makes a call at the plate. Afer it was obvious to them, sitting 20 feet away, that pitch certainly wasn’t a strike. Luckily he seems to have thick skin (unlike his mom).
Baseball was canceled in 2020 and his JV high school team played at a different field this year, so I haven’t been at this local field for a few summers. I loved being back. I loved watching these little kids yesterday.
For a few minutes, I even wished we could do it all again. Start over at Tball.
Oh man
If I knew then what I know now…
I would record a few full games every season. Yep, full games. I would bring a tripod and a camera and record the whole game. I would LOVE to watch Max play tball, machine pitch, pony league, and little league again. I would watch an old little league game before Netflix any day. Photos and 10-second videos just aren’t enough. My memory isn’t as good as I want it to be.
I would eat more concession stand hot dogs. For some reason, they taste so much better from the grill of a small town concession stand.
I would invest in a really good folding chair. Do you know they make ROCKING folding lawn chairs now??
Max is going to be a Junior in high school this coming year. I plan to see as many games as possible next Spring. I’m gonna take it all in.
If you happen to be in Somerset. I’ll be at the ball field. I’ll be the one at the tripod eating a hot dog!
Oh and be nice to the ump…he could be the son of someone sitting next to you on the bleachers:)
Play ball!
I can relate so much! Good for your son being willing to ump! My son will be a Senior this year and has played since he was 3. He originally thought he wanted to ump when he got older but after watching the abuse they endure, we both weren’t comfortable with it. He now works for the local parks and rec teaching the little kids how to play t-ball. And he loves it!
