I volunteered last week to be an election inspector at my polling place. You should too!
One of our customers is an election judge in my town. Our town has a population of 2700. I asked one day if they ever needed more volunteers..ha…funny question right? Of course, they did!
My spot was the ballot table, the easiest job. I sat with a woman who had lived in town her whole life. She and her husband raised 4 kids in the same house that her husband grew up in. I loved hanging out with the ladies of town that new everyone and had heard everything. These women took their job seriously, and after 8 hours with them, I know why.
Voting is a serious matter and quite a process. It was pretty cool seeing the process up close. I have a whole different appreciation for democracy and the “I voted” sticker.
There are checks and double checks in every process and all of these people are volunteers. These lovely people go through training and spend their day at the polling place. This happens in every town, large and small across our country. It’s pretty amazing.
Next time you are at your polling place, thank them for volunteering and maybe volunteer yourself one day. You’ll have a whole new appreciation for this democracy of ours.
