It was career day in Somerset Wisconsin last week.
.
I spent the day in my son Max’s 1st grade classroom.
.
I was supposed to talk about my career. The things I learned in school that prepared me for my job, the things I love about my job and the things I don’t love so much about my job. So I talked about counting money (super important) I talked about being nice to people (again, super important) and I talked about how yarn was made.
.
Now remember, these are 1st graders…I was competing for their attention with another parent who is a SEMI TRUCK DRIVER! They got to honk the horn and everything! Do you know the back of a semi truck has a BED? A BED! How on earth do you make a job as a yarn shop owner as exciting as that?
.
You show them pictures of cute animals…that’s what:)
.
I showed them this picture…that just sucked them right in.
.
.
Then we talked about how heavy and dirty fleece can be and how much work it takes to make this into yarn. We passed around pieces of nice cleaned and combed fiber.
.
.
Then I brought out the big guns…Alpaca.
.
.
Wait it does!
.
.
.
They LOVED the pictures. Plus they got to go home with a goodie back with some yarn and finger knitting instructions. What could be better?
.
They wrote me thank you letters. I thought I would share a few…
.
.
.
.
.
Some kids even drew pictures.
.
.
.
.
.
.
I am assuming the teacher didn’t take a close look at the letters before Max scooped them up to take them home:) Because the last picture is an amazing likeness of me.
.
.
I’ll be back next year Somerset Elementary…if you’ll have me! Next year I wanna honk the semi truck horn too!
.
Oh my goodness, I can’t stop giggling! Too cute!
It sounds like you made a great impression and I just love the letters and pictures. As an alpaca breeder who just recently had all the alpacas sheared, I just love those pictures too. Thanks for sharing your great day.
Oh. My. Word. Thanks for the laugh! What a great post…
As the mom of a third grade boy and a Kindergarten girl, I know exactly what you mean – SEMI-TRUCK DRIVERS are WAY cooler than interior designers, too (which is what I do for a living).
LOVE the last drawing. Love. It.
Have a great week!
I must say you just made my Monday!!! I have a second and a third grader, so I know how these school trips go. I love those letters, and I am really happy you shared them. Thanks for making my day.
I brought my spinning wheel to Finn’s preschool class last week – it was wildly popular (although the kids were somewhat disappointed they didn’t get to run the wheel – only got to touch the fiber). Unfortunately, I didn’t get to take home a stack of thank-you letters – those are priceless!
Ha ha! That’s awesome! So much fun to read. Thanks for sharing. 🙂
You are so funny and perceptive. I really enjoy you wit. Kids are great fun if we take the time to listen and watch.
