We know many of us are going through our stash and are finding skeins of yarn that have not yet been wound into a ball. This video is for you!
A few basics to remember.
1. Make sure you have enough time to wind the yarn. You don’t want to stop half way through and put the skein away. Once you start, its best to make sure to finish. It will take 10 – 30 minutes to wind a skein of yarn. Depending on the size and thickness.
2. Open the skein up. Make sure you have a place for the big loop of yarn you now have to hang while you are winding. The hands of someone in your family, your knees, the ironing board, the cutting board in your kitchen that comes out from the counter, many things will work. But don’t just set it on a flat surface! Don’t remove any ties yet!
3. Make sure it is organized with all the strands going in the same direction. Pay special attention to the smaller ties that are horizontal across the skein. Most skeins will have at least 2 ties. These ties are just helping to keep the yarn contained, we will remove them later. Be sure that there are no stray pieces of yarn that happen to be laying in the wrong direction across these ties.
4. Time to remove the ties. Check out the ties and cut them off. One of the ties will have a bigger knot. That knot will include the 2 ends of the yarn. Cut the tie, freeing up the 2 ends of the yarn. Pick an end and start to wind around your fingers. I don’t wind a center pull ball, but if you want to do that, there are some youtube videos to help.
5. Go slow. If a strand gets out of line while you are winding, take the time to put it back. Don’t keep going with strands unorganized. It will tangle.
That’s it! You can do it.
