Vote.

Friday, July 29th, 2016

voting-pin

Wow…what a couple of weeks it’s been. Politics.

Let’s be honest, it’s been a crazy year.

Whatever way you lean politically one thing I hope you do is vote. Participate.

My husband and I, and sometimes our kids, watched the majority of the prime time coverage of both conventions.  No matter what you think about either candidate, you have to appreciate the history of a convention.  For almost 200 years our country has gone through this process. Politics are fascinating.

My take away from either convention, the thing that I was thinking about last night, was the gold star mom who introduced Obama to the convention on Wednesday night. She was so inspired by meeting the president that she decided it was time to contribute to her community. She was 73 and she ran for school board in her town in Ohio. This retired nurse, mom, grandma, great grandma, decided that she needed to participate in her community. She won the seat and serves today on the school board. She is the one that is making America great. By making a contribution, by stepping up, by volunteering. I loved it.

I love hearing stories about regular people stepping up. Volunteering. Something as small as coaching your kids in ball, volunteering at the concession stand, making a quilt for a church donation, being an election judge. All of these things are contributing to your community.

Now how about your vote?

Sure the President is important, but the people who really effect change and make the laws and rules that you live by in your community are important too.

Congressmen and senators are up for election. You know the ones we hear about causing “gridlock” in Washington. Yep, those are important. Google them.

State Representatives are also up for election. Who is your representative? Google it.

Supreme Court judges, Appeals judges, Circuit Court judges. You may have a chance to vote for all of these in your state and county. Figure out who they are. What they stand for. It might take a bit of google searching. These candidates aren’t spoon fed to us on CNN or Fox News. These are important votes. They craft our justice system.

A women running for District Attorney in my county did some door knocking a few days ago. I met her and thanked her for introducing herself. I like when politicians knock on doors. I’m not bugged or bothered. I am awed that people want to put themselves out there. That they want to open themselves up for criticism and all that comes with public office.

I’m not sure I’ll vote for her. I haven’t Googled her yet:)

Raphael and the Monkey

Sunday, June 12th, 2016

So…remember when I said it wasn’t a competition…then this happened?

Well I was wrong and I think I won.

Could it get much cuter than Raphael and the monkey I made?  And the hat.  Really…

Really…this is all a knitter needs. A sweet pic of the baby with the stuff you made. Thanks Ruth for snapping this pic and sharing it.  Much love to you guys:)

Knit in Public Day 2016

Sunday, June 12th, 2016

Join us Saturday, June 18th, 2016 for World Wide Knit in Public Day!  We’ll be knitting in public!

wwkip day

Truth be told, we knit in public a lot, but this time we hope you’ll join us.

We’ll be crafting on the patio in front of the shop in celebration of World Wide Knit in Public Day. Yes it’s a real thing…

It’s actually a week long celebration of fiber artists and it takes place at different times all around the world.

We’re planning to sit out on our patio on Saturday, June 18th from 10am – 5pm.

Bring a lawn chair, some snacks for yourself and your favorite beverage and we’ll wave at all the poor souls sitting in traffic!

We’ll have a few canopies set up to protect us from the sun or rain.  So we’ll be knitting out rain or shine.

Bring your knitting, crochet, needlepoint, spinning, felting, weaving…whatever kind of fiber project you have going on. We hope to see you!  Come early, because you know how Stillwater traffic can be on a beautiful summer Saturday!

We have “the egg” this year…so that will be fun. Think of the photo opportunities:)

Shop Hop 2016 Review

Wednesday, April 13th, 2016
Sketch It

Sketch It

Shop Hop 2016 is behind us and it proved once again that the Twin Cities has the best group of fiber junkies in the country!

More than 870 hoppers passed through our doors during the 4 days of the hop this year. That is 100 more than any other year. Wow!

You were generous with your donations, helping our shop raise $1000 more than last year. Your donations will help Valley Outreach serve over $16,000 meals! What a difference 4 days can make 🙂

The overall shop hop theme this year was “Inspired by Literature”. Shops could choose a book, author or genre of literature to guide their yarn and pattern design choices. We chose graphic novels as our theme. We decided the best way to honor our theme was to write our own little graphic novel.

Little note about the pattern itself.  A very fast shop hop knitter has noticed an error in the pattern. It is changed on Ravelry and you can download the changed pattern here.  If you’ve already started and missed the error, no biggie…if the zig zag section is zigging and zagging, press on.

We had a little fun with our theme in a photo booth with conversation bubbles…here are a few pics from the weekend!

Quince & Co Owl

Tuesday, January 19th, 2016

We finally have a great stock of Quince & Co Owl on our shelves today!

Owl is a perfect blend of alpaca and wool.  50% American Wool and 50% New Zealand Alpaca! Knits up on a 6 or 7 to a worsted weight gauge. It’s a beauty!

Quince just published a new pattern that we LOVE for this yarn.  Nascha. 4 skeins each in 2 colors makes this lovely poncho. And it’s in a very addictive brioche stitch, reversible!!

Makers’ League Details

Tuesday, January 19th, 2016

MakersLeagueBlue
This post includes the who, what and where of Makers’ League.

Who: Anyone who wants to join.
What: A project of the month club.
Where: Darn Knit Anyway – online and in store.

Rules of play. It’s easy!
1. We choose a project for the month.
2. You buy the yarn for the project from us.
3. The first project you purchase for the year gets you a Makers’ League canvas tote bag and patch. (think Girl Scout patches)

For every month you join in, you get another patch to attach to your Makers’ League tote!  Collect 5 or more and get a coupon for 20% off an entire day of shopping at DKA!  Here are a few cute patches that you’ll have the chance to attach to your bag!

Sheep IHeartDKApatch Alpaca

A few other fun things to note.  We’ll be offering free project help during the month for Makers’ Leaguers (don’t think that’s a real word).  Our Maker’s League help will be Tuesday mornings from 10-noon and Tuesday nights from 6-8pm. But as always at Darn Knit Anyway, you are welcome to come anytime for help!

We have a limited quantity of patches. Only 50 per month. Patches aren’t available for purchase separately and you must buy the yarn for the projects from Darn Knit Anyway.

This is a pick and choose kind of program. You can choose to participate in all months of the year, or only 1.

Projects will be revealed once a month, but you’ll be able to purchase the projects throughout the year going forward.  So if you don’t get around to participating in February’s project now, but want to knit February’s project in May you sure can. You’ll be able to get the Maker’s League bag for whatever first project you purchase during 2106, you just won’t be guaranteed that month’s patch. Patches have a limited quantity available.
There is no additional cost to join Makers’ League, just the purchase of the required yarn.
Some months will be patterns designed by us and some will be patterns currently on Ravelry designed by other terrific people.

Join us in Makers’ League!  Our first project will be revealed next week and will be available for purchase February 1st!

Finish it up fun!

Wednesday, December 30th, 2015

Let’s use the New Year to get some projects finished.

Bring to the store up to 3 unfinished knit or crochet projects on January 2nd, 3rd, 4th or 5th.

We’ll record the projects and probably take a few pictures of them.

As you finish up each project, bring them in and we’ll check them off of your list and enter you in that week’s drawing.  We will have drawings every Monday morning from January 11th through February 29th for people who have finished a project that week.

Your projects can be like mine, simple…

#1 Right handed A River Runs Through Mitt

#2 Rip back and re knit the collar for my Agnes Sweater

#3 TBD

I’m sure you have a few projects in your stash you have been avoiding:)

Hope to see you soon!
